An Assessment of Students’ Performance on Drilling and Milling Operations at Tertiary Institutions in Borno and Yobe States, Nigeria

Abstract


Technology Education encompasses the realm of learning that provides students with the opportunity to acquire both hands-on practical skills and fundamental scientific knowledge. This study aimed to evaluate the practical metal machining skills of tertiary students in Borno and Yobe States. Two research questions were addressed, and the research design employed was experimental in nature. Data collection utilized an adapted version of the Metal Machining Practice Performance Test (MMPPT). The study's population included 21 NCE III (Technical) Metalwork Students from accredited institutions offering NCE (Technical) programs in Borno and Yobe states. The MMPPT test instrument demonstrated a strong reliability coefficient of 0.80. To answer the research questions, mean ratings and percentages were employed. Additionally, one hypothesis was tested using a T-Test at a significance level of 0.05. The results indicated a significant difference in the practical skills performance of metalwork students between drilling machine operations and milling machine operations, with t (critical) < t- crt = df = 20. The study's findings revealed that NCE (Technical) Metalwork Students achieved an average performance level in drilling operations and below-average performance in tasks related to mounting the workpiece, mounting the milling cutter, dividing head, and the milling process of spur gear.
