Assessment of Quality Management Practices in Construction Firms in Nigeria

Abstract


The alarming rate at which collapsed buildings are witnessed in Nigeria has increased in recent times. More so, it remains indisputable that major construction projects contribute immensely to every nation's standard of living and economy. Therefore, the need to ensure adequate implementation of an efficient and reliable Quality Management System (QMS) in construction firms should always be emphasised.  However, this study seeks to analyse quality management practices in construction firms, to suggest ways to improve quality control and service delivery. Eight respondents who are experienced engineers working with construction companies – fully registered with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) in Nigeria – were issued questionnaires (Qualitative analysis). The questionnaires encompass issues faced with QMS implementation in construction companies. Notwithstanding, results obtained from the field survey revealed that the application of QMS is mostly regarded as a means to fulfil contractual obligations and not necessarily to satisfy the client. In addition, it was established that top management needs to participate fully in setting quality policies that conform to ISO regulations to ensure the success of construction projects
