Effect of ICT-based Instruction on the Achievement of Social Studies in College of Education in Bauchi state
Abstract
This study examined the effect of ICT-based Instruction on the achievement of social studies among NCE II students in Adamu Tafawa Balewa College of Education, Kangere, Bauchi State. ICT provides better information to present content, which helps learners in concentration and better understanding and long term retention of information, which is not possible otherwise. The researcher in this study aspires to measure the effectiveness of the ICT based teaching in terms of student’s achievement in social studies. By analyzing the hypothesis, it was found that Teaching with ICT is better than that of traditional approach so far as achievement in social studies is concerned. Therefore, ICT-based teaching is beneficial and it should be adopted by the teachers so as to increase the achievement in social studies among the students. The study adopted the quasi experimental design. This is because the design does not allow the use of randomization of the population of the study. Specifically, the non-equivalent group test-posttest design was used in which intact classes were chosen for both experiment and control groups respectively. The researcher administers pretest to both groups in order to verify the presence or absence of any difference between the two groups that is the experimental and control. The experimental group would use information technology based instructional teaching strategy, while the control group would use the conventional method of teaching. Thereafter, the two groups experimental and control would be subjected to pre-test and posttest to ascertain the effect of information and communication technology based instructional strategy on achievement of social studies students. Based on the findings espoused above, it was concluded that: the use of ICT-based instruction in the teaching of social studies enhanced the achievement of students in social studies. In view of the conclusion drawn from the study, it was recommended among others that there is outright need for the incorporation of modem ICT-based instruction into the teaching and learning of social studies in teacher training institutions. Experts in social studies should collaborate with IT-Finns to help produce social studies course ware that would simplify teachers’ challenges in producing a well-structured ICT-based lesson.
