Effect of Inorganic Blowing Agent on the Properties of Calcium Carbonate Filled Rubber Vulcanizate

Abstract


This work studies the effect of sodium bicarbonate as a chemical blowing on some properties of natural rubber vulcanizate with the aim to produce sponge rubber material. The experimental samples were formulated using a loading range of 0 to 12 parts per hundred of rubber (pphr) at interval of 3 pphr of the blowing agent. The sponge vulcanizate were prepared via two-stage blowing method after mixing in a two roll mill mixer. The first stage was heating in an oven and finally in a compression moulding machine at 140° C for 20 minutes to obtain the sponge rubber. The tensile strength, hardness and density correspondingly decreased with inclusion of sodium bicarbonate as a blowing agent from 3.93 to 3.05 MPa, 45 to 33 Shores A Hardness and 0.90 to 0.30 gcm-3 respectively. Conversely, water uptake was found to increase from 4.66 to 44.18 % suggesting the presence of interconnected open cell formation. In addition, the scanning electron microscopic study also showed the formation of quasi-open cells and reveals the presence of residual particle agglomeration of sodium carbonate as a result of thermal decomposition of the blowing agent.
