Challenges and Prospects of Duck production in Taraba state. A case study of Ardo-kola Local Government Area

Abstract


This research investigated the challenges and future prospects of duck farming in Ardo-kola Local Government Area, Taraba State. Data were gathered from a sample of 100 randomly selected respondents through the use of questionnaires. Basic descriptive statistical tools, including percentages, were employed to analyze the collected data. The findings revealed that a significant obstacle in the study area related to duck farming is the lack of awareness and general knowledge about duck production. A majority of the respondents had never consumed duck meat and held the belief that there were no religious restrictions associated with duck farming. This prevailing perception has negatively impacted the demand for duck meat and eggs, leading to a scarcity of empirical research on the management and genetic enhancement of ducks in Nigeria. This study highlights the uncommon nature of duck farming in the region. It underscores the need for educating the local community through the assistance of extension agents who can organize seminars and provide training to duck farmers. Such efforts should focus on elucidating the benefits of duck rearing, including its potential as a source of income. Additionally, farmers should be informed about essential practices such as proper sanitation and improved veterinary care to reduce duck mortality rates.
