Predicting Organisational Commitment among Teachers in Low-Cost Private Schools in Lagos State: Do Institutional Vulnerability and Altruism Really Matter?

Abstract


Organisational commitment plays crucial role in the success and effectiveness of educational institutions particularly in low-cost private schools. This study investigated predicting organisational commitment among teachers in low-cost private schools in Lagos State: Do institutional vulnerability and altruism really matter? The research designs adopted for this was the descriptive survey design, the population of this study comprised 8,688 teachers in the 1,046 low-cost private secondary schools in the 20 LGAS in Lagos State that are members of Association for Formidable Education Development (AFED). Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 800 participants for the study. Three research questions were raised while two hypotheses were tested. Three instruments were used for data collection: An adapted form of The Work Values Questionnaire, Organisational Climate Index and Organisational Commitment Questionnaire. The data collected were analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviation, Analysis of Variance statistical tools. Hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance and the three hypotheses were accepted. The findings of the study showed that: Low-cost private secondary school teachers had moderate level of organisational commitment; altruism did not have significant contribution to the variance in organisational commitment of teachers; Institutional vulnerability was found to be a good predictor of teacher commitment. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended, among others, that: Low-cost private schools need to improve the level of organisational commitment of their teachers because of its relationship to productivity; LCPS owners must put adequate measures in place to protect teachers from some influential individuals or stakeholders; LCPS should invest significant resources on their teachers’ welfare and school facilities in order to improve their commitment. School owners and management should create enabling environment for their teachers. This study contributed to a better understanding of the relationship among work values, school climate and organisational commitment among LCPS teachers.
