Abstract

This study examined senior secondary school students’ attrition in geography in Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State. A survey research design was adopted, involving a population of 756 SSS II Geography students from both public and private schools in the area. A sample of 189 students was selected through a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using the Student Assessment of Factors Influencing Senior Secondary School Students’ Attrition in Geography Questionnaire (SAFAGQ), which was designed to gather information on student attrition. The instrument had a reliability coefficient of 0.786, obtained using Cronbach's alpha statistics. Data were analyzed using mean scores. The study's findings revealed a high attrition rate in geography among students in the study area. Factors contributing to this attrition include the scope of geography and the inadequacy of instructional materials for teaching and learning. Based on these findings, recommendations were made.
