Tech-ing the Sacred: Exploring the Ethical Considerations of Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Religious Education
Abstract
This article investigates the ethical implications of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into religious education, focusing on the balance between technological advancements and the preservation of sacred values. The research question centers on how AI can enhance religious learning while addressing ethical concerns related to authenticity, bias, and data privacy. The article adopted a comprehensive literature review and case studies for its methodology, including the use of AI chatbots in religious settings, to assess the impact on student engagement and retention. Key findings reveal that AI has the potential to personalize religious education, fostering inclusivity and critical thinking among students. However, this integration raises significant ethical dilemmas regarding the authenticity of AI-generated religious content and the potential for bias in algorithmic decision-making. Moreover, concerns about data security and the loss of human interaction in spiritual guidance are highlighted. The article concludes with recommendations for educators and religious institutions, emphasizing the importance of establishing ethical frameworks that guide the use of AI in religious contexts. These frameworks should prioritize transparency, inclusivity, and respect for diverse cultural values while enhancing the educational experience. By addressing these ethical considerations, religious education can effectively harness the benefits of AI, ensuring that technological advancements contribute positively to spiritual learning and community engagement.
