Secondary School Teachers’ Attitude to Work in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated Secondary School Teachers’ work attitude in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A of Edo State, Nigeria. Two research questions and one hypothesis were raised as a guide for the study. The population consisted of all Senior Secondary School Students from fifty-nine private and nineteen public schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The systematic sampling procedure was used to select five private and three public schools, giving a total of eight schools. Fourty students were purposively drawn from each of the eight schools, giving a total of three hundred and twenty students, who participated in the study. An instrument titled ‘Teachers’ Work Attitude was used to elicit information on teachers’ attitude to work from the students. The findings show that (i) 72.7% of respondents rated their teachers’ work attitude as good while 27.3% of respondents rated their teachers’ work attitude as bad and (ii) there is a significant difference in teachers’ work attitude in public and private secondary schools. 93% of respondents from public schools rated their teachers’ work attitude as good as against 61.5% of respondents from private school. Based on the findings, it was recommended that private school proprietors/proprietress should (i) improve on the recruitment of inexperience staff and on salary wages in order to encourage good teachers’ work attitude (ii) supervision of instruction at all times should be sustained in order to further promote and maintain better attitude of teachers towards their work.
