Analysis of Radio Frequency (87.5 – 108 MHz) For Short Range Low Power Smart Device Utilization

Abstract


This paper presents the analysis of radio frequency range (87.5 – 108MHz) for short range low power smart device utilization. This analysis was done in Benin City taking four locations as a case study to investigate and validate the presence of underutilized spectrum and vacant spectrum in frequency modulation that can be used by smart devices. The Register Transfer Level - Software Defined Radio (RTL-SDR) captured the FM radio spectrum measurements using MATLAB/Simulink. The RTL-SDR interfaces with the HP 2000 series laptop via the USB with R820T antenna. From the analysis, it is evident that there are vacant spectrums available in frequency modulation spectrum in Nigeria. That quantify the average number of frequency modulation stations that have protected coverage; the unallocated frequency modulation spectrum; the vacant frequency modulation spectrum and the potential Cognitive Internet of Things (CIoT) bitrates across Nigeria, and result also provides a detailed analysis of selected locations, of varying population densities, which show the relationship between population and the number of frequency modulation stations for 37 locations in Nigeria.
