Effect of fibre architecture on the tensile and thermal properties of virgin and waste acrylic reinforced epoxy composites

Abstract

Fibres, yarns and fabrics were produced from used fabrics and virgin fibres respectively.  The two sets were then used in compounding composites using epoxy resin as the matrix. The yarns were then woven into 6, 7, 8 and 9 picks per centimetre (ppcm) and 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 ends per centimetre (epcm) plain weave fabrics. The waste and virgin fibres, yarns and fabrics were characterised for tensile strength, staple length, fineness and other important properties before using them to fabricate the composites. The hand lay-up technique was used for the composites fabrication. The composites were analysed for tensile and thermal properties. The results obtained show that the tensile strength of the yarn reinforced composites was higher than that of the fibre and fabric reinforced (in both weft and warp directions). For the thermogravimetric (TGA) results, it was observed generally that gradual weight loss started at 100 oC for all the composites. And after the decomposition, a residual weight loss of between 8 -10 % were left for all the composites at 600 oC.
