Utilization Level of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Research Writing among Undergraduate Biology Students in Zaria, Nigeria
Abstract
The study focused on the utilization level of artificial intelligence tools in research writing among undergraduate biology students in Zaria, Nigeria. The study was directed by one premise, two research questions, and two research aims. The study was carried out at the Federal University of Education, Zaria, which is situated in Kaduna State's Zaria Local Government Area. The study used a descriptive survey design. 225 biology students made up the study's sample, which was selected at random from the study population. A questionnaire called the "Utilization of Artificial Intelligence Tools for Research Writing Questionnaire (UAITRQ)" was used to gather data for this study. The mean and standard deviation of the data were utilized to assess the research questions, and the t-test was employed to test the null hypothesis. The results revealed that despite differences in academic level, students across all years are actively engaging with AI tools, recognizing their potential in enhancing research writing in Biology and there is a no statistically significant gender difference in the usage pattern of AI tools among undergraduate Biology students, with a p-value of 0.05. In light of the results, the researcher suggests that higher education institutions such as Federal University of Education, Zaria should develop and implement formal training programs or workshops on the responsible use of AI tools for academic purposes and Since the study indicated no substantial gender difference in the employment of AI tools, educational institutions should shift their attention from gender-based interventions to boosting digital competence for all students.
