The Application of Remote Sensing and GIS on Urban-Induced Land-Use Land-Cover Changes in Urban Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria
Abstract
The research analyzed urban-induced land-use land-cover changes in urban Zaria between 2018 and 2000. The study determined the magnitude of urban-induced land-use landcover and the rate of changes in the Zaria metropolis. The study used Landsat TM images from 2000, 2006, 2012, and 2018 obtained from the National Center for Remote Sensing, Jos. Google Maps were acquired from Google Earth Inc. The image analysis period from 2000, 2006, 2012, and 2018 was carried out using GIS software ArcGIS 10.2, while simple descriptive statistics (frequency table and percentage) were used to analyze the data generated. From the findings, the built-up area showed a consistent increase over time, and this is because of increased population and consequent conversion of other land uses into residential areas. The rate of urban-induced land-use land-cover changes portrayed an annual rate change of 21.7% overall for the study period. The research recommends an urban-induced land-use land-cover change information database that can be generated using remote sensing and GIS techniques for proper planning and monitoring in urban Zaria; the government should adopt stringent urban development control measures.
