Adolescent Neglect, Students’ Psychotic Trait and Academic Performance in Sokoto
Abstract
The paper examines the correlation between adolescent neglect, psychotic traits, and academic performance among school students in Sokoto. The study adopts a descriptive research design with a correlational approach. The research population comprises 17,235 students enrolled across 28 senior secondary schools in Sokoto metropolis. The sample selection involves five schools, encompassing three boys' schools, three girls' schools, and three mixed-gender schools, resulting in a total of 7,421 students. The sampling process employs a multi-stage technique, combining stratified, purposive, proportionate, and random sampling methods. The sample size of 365 is determined using the Research Advisors Sample Determinant (2006). The research tools encompass two questionnaires: the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ: Adult Version for ages 16-69) and a self-constructed Adolescent Neglect Scale (ANS). The analysis of data employs the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to examine the relationships posited by the first and second hypotheses. Additionally, an independent sample t-test is conducted to assess the third hypothesis. The findings of the study reveal a significant correlation between adolescent neglect and students' psychotic traits, as well as a notable relationship between adolescent neglect and academic performance. Notably, while no statistically significant gender difference is observed concerning academic performance among adolescents facing neglect in their homes and schools, the study underscores the imperative for caregivers to ensure that children and adolescents under their supervision are not deprived of essential life necessities.
