Exploring the Workflow of Document Preparation in Digitizing Research Output: Librarians’ Insights in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria

Abstract


Document preparation is the overall handling of text for processing which begins with obtaining selected documents to be digitized; registering to keep track of them; checking for suitability and prepare for digitization. This study was carried out to investigate the influence of document preparation on the visibility of research output at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. The study was guided by four specific objectives with their matching research questions. The design employed in this study was survey research design. Data were collected using structured questionnaire with Four point Likert Scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation, while Student-t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that the mean range for document preparation was 1.06 -3.68, with a standard deviation range of 0.42-1.31, indicating an influence on visibility of research output. Notably, the P-value (.0001) is less than the alpha level (.05), thus there is a significant influence of document preparation on visibility of research output in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The result further shows that all the mean responses are above 3.0, indicating that the respondents all agreed that the listed 15 items and the identified 10 items constitute the challenges and strategies for enhancing effective digitization workflow management of research outputs respectively. The paper recommends that the preparation of documents and conversion to digital formats can be enhanced through the purchase and application of digital conversion machines and equipment.
