Interactive Effect of Feed Rate, Beater Speed and Moisture Content on Motorizied Mobile Maize Shelling Machine
Abstract
This study was conducted on a fabricated motorized mobile maize shelling machine using hybrid maize sample at three different moisture content, beater speed and feed rate. The maize Shelling machine was driven mechanically using a petrol motor connected to a belt and pulley system operated at a steady concave clearance of 25mm. In this study different parameters affecting performance of maize shelling were established. The performance of the maize Sheller was tested at three different moisture contents (7.10%, 9.12% and 11.51%) three beater speed (300rpm, 350rpm and 400rpm) and three different feed rates (2kg,4kg and 6kg) and the results were analyzed using ANOVA and Graphic Rating Scale as a statistical tool for the machine performance. The results showed that, there is a significant interactive effect of feed rate, speed and moisture content on performance of the maize shelling machine [F (6, 63) = 3.492; p<.05]. With eta coefficient [η = 0.176] showing that, feed rate, beater speed and moisture content significantly and jointly contributed 17.6% of the total variance in performance of the maize shelling machine. This implies that feed rate, beater speed and moisture content are all parameters that affected effective performance of the machine. The best combined factors most suitable for the detachment of maize grains from ear head for the designed machine is 350rpm at 6kg feed rate and 11.5% crop moisture content.
