Agricultural Science Teachers’ Professionalization and Its Impact on Students’ Academic Performance in Senior Secondary School in Gombe Metropolis

Abstract

This research was aimed at investigating the categories of Agricultural science teachers in teaching job (professional and non-professional) and their role on students’ academic performance, the area of research study is Gombe metropolis, the method of research design was survey study, the population of the study comprises of200 Agricultural science teachers as well as 2000 Students offering Agricultural science subject in senior secondary schools within Gombe metropolis. A sample size of 62 Agricultural science teachers and 200 students were randomly selected using stratified random sampling, questionnaire were used to collect data from the teachers and for the students their performance in form of examination result were obtained directly from examination offices for SS1, SS2 and SS3. Three research questions and a null hypothesis were formulated to guide the research study. Data collected were presented in tabular form then analyzed using percentage and t-test of significance. The result revealed that quality control in teacher recruitment is not strictly adhered and there is significant differences in student performance in SS2 and SS3 between professional and non-professional teachers at 0.05 level of significance, the paper recommended that employers should give priority on both the teaching qualification and teaching subject while recruiting teachers among others.
